Two Questions about Jesus

Luke is one of four Gospel writers. He made a statement about Jesus in Luke 8.

Go ahead and read the entire section, and then I’ll point out the actual statement.

Luke 8:22-25: One day, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and started out. 23  As they sailed across, Jesus settled down for a nap. But soon, a fierce storm came down on the lake. The boat was filling with water, and they were in real danger. 24  The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and the raging waves. The storm stopped, and all was calm! 25  Then he asked them, “Where is your faith?” The disciples were terrified and amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “When he gives a command, even the wind and waves obey him!”

What made me wonder was what Luke said in verse 25. The disciples were terrified and amazed. Ponder that for a moment, terrified and amazed. That leads me to ask two questions about Jesus.

#1:  What terrifies you about Jesus?

It terrifies me that Jesus can tell a storm to be quiet. He told both lightning and thunder to sit down and be still. The Bible tells us that we should fear God. That’s a little bit “shaken in my boots” and a lot of deep reverence and respect. It terrifies me that Jesus might ask me the same question, where is your faith? My faith gets dinged every time someone I love dies. I don’t stop believing in him. That’s been decided once and for all. I simply want to know why. He seems to say “trust me” more than I care to hear. It terrifies me that Jesus allowed his disciples to enter into the storm in the first place. Why didn’t he prevent it? Why doesn’t Jesus prevent storms from coming our way? Storms are often the place where God shows up most often. So what terrifies you about Jesus?

#2: What amazes you about Jesus?

What amazes me about Jesus is that he told a storm to be quiet. Amazement often borders on the edge of terror. Who is this man? Never forget Jesus is God.  Jesus was human. He gets us. Jesus forgives us. He gives us our greatest need - forgiveness. What amazes me about Jesus? His teaching, his authority, his disdain for hypocrisy, his compassion, his courage and obedience to go to the cross.

How about you? What amazes you about Jesus? Two questions worth asking.
